Max Kauffman
Attorney

Max Kauffman joined Disability Rights Washington in October 2023, bringing his experience of disability rights litigation and advocacy from his hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico. There, Max led efforts in systemic litigation, most notably in cases to improve nursing care access for children with chronic medical conditions and to expand access to adequate medical care in New Mexico’s correctional system. Max also spearheaded a complaint and outcomes addressing the implementation of special education for incarcerated youth in adult prison facilities.

As an advocate, Max brings leadership in community coalition building and committee action to address the needs of individuals with disabilities; including his co-chair position on a critical advisory committee to improve outcomes of police encounters with individuals in crisis, and his directorial role at the National Alliance on Mental Illness of New Mexico. Max’s prior experience as a Mental Health Attorney with the public defenders, and his contributions to enhancing diversion programs while in that role, add to his range of impact. His work has been recognized by the New Mexico Supreme Court, as a valued advisor on mental health and competency to stand trial.

As part of the Community Inclusion & Services Team, Max now brings his legal expertise and passion for advocacy to DRW, aiming to foster justice and inclusivity for the disabled community in Washington.
