Get Involved with AVID
DRW’s AVID Program is accepting applications for three law student interns for 2020-21, including one paid Summer Diversity Grant position!
AVID focuses on improving the conditions, treatment, services, and reentry for people with disabilities who are incarcerated in our state’s jails and prisons, as well as those who reside at the Special Commitment Center. AVID visits and monitors correctional facilities, provides Technical Assistance Services to teach inmates with disabilities about self-advocacy, writes reports, and advocates for systemic change with the Washington State Department of Corrections and various county jails through negotiation and litigation.
AVID is seeking three interns in its Seattle office. AVID interns will work full time over the summer as a volunteer, extern, or law school grant recipient. During the summer, AVID interns will focus on providing Technical Assistance Services, going on monitoring trips to prisons and jails to look for legal violations, assisting with investigations and litigation, and working on research and writing assignments. Technical Assistance will be a large portion of the work; this involves speaking to inmates on the phone and corresponding via letter, issue spotting disability-related legal issues, researching policies and laws, and providing legal rights information. During the school year, the AVID intern will continue this work as a paid part-time employee for 6-10 hours per week.
