On March 27, 2018 AVID joined other stakeholders for the Governor’s signing of House Bill 1889, which creates an independent corrections ombuds office in Washington. The ombuds will be located within the Office of the Governor and will be tasked with providing information and assistance to people in prison and their families, conducting independent monitoring of all twelve state prisons, and working collaboratively with state corrections officials to resolve issues arising in our prisons. The corrections ombuds will also issue annual reports updating the Governor and the legislature on its work. AVID is looking forward to working with this new ombuds office as we strive to enforce the rights of inmates and improve prison conditions across the state.
