Disability Rights Washington seeks an attorney to protect the basic rights of people with disabilities to make personal and financial decisions. This includes investigating how people in positions to assist them in exercising those rights respect, protect, and facilitate the individual’s expressed interests.

This position will be housed in one of Disability Rights Washington’s several offices, including Seattle, Olympia or Tacoma, depending on office space availability and the employee’s preference.

The attorney will travel to various locations in Washington to meet with people where they live, talk with them and their professional supports, and review documentation to ensure they are not being exploited.  These investigations will inform subsequent advocacy to address any suspected financial exploitation, neglect, abuse, or civil rights violations.

Other responsibilities will include analyzing information, commenting on regulations, writing reports and educating policy makers. The attorney will also assist individuals they meet with to become better self-advocates by providing them with information about their rights and methods for enforcing those rights.

Disability Rights Washington works to pursue justice on matters related to human and legal rights. We do this to further our mission, which is to advance the dignity, equality, and self-determination of people with disabilities.  Therefore, the ideal candidate has personal and professional experience working on behalf of marginalized communities generally or for people with disabilities specifically.  The ideal candidate also has a disability and/or represents diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds.  Bilingual fluency in certain languages is also an asset.  Relevant experience may include civil rights, guardianship or Social Security related advocacy, work in the criminal justice system, and investigations.  A law degree from an accredited school of law and current good standing with the Washington State Bar Association at the time of assuming the position or shortly thereafter are required. The attorney must be an organized, self-motivated professional who is able to work collaboratively with other staff to engage in creative, multi-modal advocacy strategies to achieve social justice for people with disabilities.  Strong research, writing, and oral communication skills are required.
