Heather McKimmie selected as Gender and Justice Commissioner
Heather McKimmie, Director of Disability Rights Washington's Amplifying Voices of Inmates with Disabilities (AVID) Program, has been selected to join the Washington State Supreme Court Gender and Justice Commission as one of four new Gender and Justice Commissioners. The mission of the Gender and Justice Commission is to promote gender equality in the system of law and justice in Washington State.
Given her work with inmates with disabilities, Heather is particularly interested in bringing a disability perspective to the Commission’s priority related to Incarcerated Women and Girls. Disability Rights Washington has special federal access authority to monitor the conditions of prisons and jails and to contact women and girls with disabilities who are incarcerated to hear about their concerns. Heather will be able to use information gathered with that access authority to support her work on the Commission. Heather looks forward to serving on the Commission to help improve gender equality for people with disabilities involved in Washington’s justice system.
