Marc Moreno: A Preventable Death

March 17, 2017

Recently, Thomas Andres was arrested in the Tri-Cities area while experiencing a mental health crisis. His mother told a news reporter that she had reached out to the crisis center two times prior to his arrest. This news comes one year after the death of Marc Moreno, who would have turned twenty years old this week, on March 14. Marc, also from the Tri-Cities, tried to get treatment from the crisis center during his mental health crisis. Marc ended up dying in Benton County Jail.

Last fall, DRW's Rooted in Rights released "Why Did Marc Moreno Die?" to raise awareness of the facts of his story. DRW is committed to improving the system of community mental health services to make sure other people with mental illness aren’t denied the care they need, and preventing another senseless tragedy like this from ever happening again in our jails.
