Disability Rights Washington (DRW) supports Michael Raymond’s courageous advocacy in sharing his story for KING 5’s Susannah Frame’s series, The Last of the Institutions, which aired Monday night. Raymond has been a long and outspoken advocate for the rights of people with disabilities.

No human being has institutionalization on a bucket list:  we each deserve the opportunity to a full life, by the design of our individual choice, in our community, with appropriate supports.

DRW has long advocated for the downsizing, consolidation and closure of Washington’s institutions for people with intellectual disabilities. Providing services in large facilities with high overhead costs and less tailored services is an outdated service delivery model.  People with very complex medical needs and significantly involved disabilities can be, and are, served in the community, and studies show these community-served individuals have a greater likelihood of adaptive behavior skills and greater freedom and autonomy.
